Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)


The Department of Defense (DoD) offers scholarships to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for training and education in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) fields and offers them career
opportunities to continue their research in civil service roles following graduation. Through the Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART), we are proud to offer our research leaders of tomorrow not only an
education, but a career.

SMART Scholars Receive:

  • Starting salary/stipend ranging from $22,500 for undergraduates to
    $38,000 for doctoral students.
  • Full tuition and related education fees.
  • Book allowance of $1,000.
  • Paid summer internships.
  • Career opportunities after graduation.

The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to citizens and
nationals of the United States. Persons who hold permanent resident
status are not eligible. Read the Application Instructions for more
