Cape Cod Foundation Announces 11 New Scholarships for 2008

Community Foundation to award scholarships from more than 50 funds

The Cape Cod Foundation has announced its scholarship application deadline of April 1, 2008. This year, 11 new scholarships enrich the body of funds available for students through the Cape Cod Foundation’s annual scholarship cycle. That brings the number of active and future scholarships administered by the Foundation to more than 50.

Last year, the Foundation awarded nearly $200,000 to more than 50 students from Cape Cod and the Islands. The Foundation also administers scholarships for its supporting organization, the Cape Cod Association, one of the oldest and largest independent scholarship funds in New England, which last year distributed more than $400,000.

New funds for 2008 include:

  • The Adair/Collins Science and Engineering Scholarship of Barnstable American Legion Post 206-for graduating high school seniors from Mashpee or Barnstable who will be pursuing science or engineering-related studies full-time.
  • The Cape Cod Investment Club Scholarship Honoring James H. Cummings-for graduating high school seniors or current college students attending full-time, four-year colleges or universities and who are pursuing a degree or career in business or finance.
  • The Chairman’s Scholarship of Wequassett Resort and Golf Club-for a graduating high school senior who resides on Cape Cod or the Islands.
  • The Samuel D’Olimpio Scholarship-for a graduating senior from Barnstable High School who participated on a varsity athletic team during his or her senior year of high school and who is pursuing post-secondary education.
  • The Daniel Bradley Gaylord Memorial Scholarship-for a graduating senior from Bourne High School who plans to major in English; preference given to students whose blood relatives are members of Masons, Shriners, or Eastern Star or who are themselves members of DeMolay or Rainbow Girls.
  • The Melissa Gifford Memorial Scholarship-for graduating seniors from Barnstable High School who intend to study in a health-science related field.
  • The Philip “PJ” Jones Memorial Scholarship-for graduating seniors from Barnstable High School who intend to study in a medically-related field.
  • The Michele Marks-McCormick Memorial Scholarship-for female pilots who have, at a minimum, their private pilot’s license, and who are pursuing their sea plane license.
  • The Edward J. O’Hara Memorial Scholarship-for graduating seniors or past graduates of Provincetown High School who will be pursuing a career in health sciences and/or who exemplify the fellowship and community service that Mr. O’Hara advocated during his lifetime.
  • The H. H. Snow Family Scholarship in Memory of Dr. Walter P. Gleason-for graduating seniors from Nauset Regional High School who will be majoring in Education.
  • The Bev Watters Memorial Scholarship-for graduating seniors from Barnstable High School who will be pursuing post-secondary education; preference given to students who are on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or are in an alternative education program.

Applications are also available through local high school guidance offices. Deadline to apply for most Foundation scholarships is April 1; however, students are encouraged to verify criteria and deadlines for all scholarships for which they may apply.

The Cape Cod Foundation was established as a nonprofit charitable organization in 1989 to serve the people of Cape Cod by linking community resources with community needs. The Foundation extends the reach of philanthropic dollars by pooling and investing funds, providing a perpetual resource for the community. The Foundation has distributed $30 million in grants and scholarships across Cape Cod and the Islands and will celebrate 20 years of charitable giving in 2009.
