Commonwealth Scholarship Plan

The purpose of this plan is to enable Canadian citizens to pursue studies in Commonwealth countries other than their own, so that upon their return home they can make a distinctive contribution to life in their country and to mutual understanding within the Commonwealth. In most cases, Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded for postgraduate study or research at the university level.

Commonwealth scholarships have three purposes:

  • to recognize and promote the highest standards of intellectual achievement and of technical and professional performance;
  • to support the national development needs of the scholars’ home countries;
  • to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth countries offering awards to Canadians include India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Occasionally other Commonwealth countries also offer awards. Applicants must have a good knowledge of written and spoken English. The application deadline is usually in late October.
