Interdisciplinary Training for Undergraduates in Biological and Mathematical Sciences
The goal of the Undergraduate Biology and Mathematics (UBM) activity isto enhance undergraduate education and training at the intersection ofthe biological and mathematical sciences and to better prepareundergraduate biology or mathematics students to pursue graduate studyand careers in fields that integrate the mathematical and biologicalsciences.
The core of the activity is long-term research experiencesfor interdisciplinary balanced teams of at least two undergraduates.Projects should focus on research at the intersection of themathematical and biological sciences.
Projects should provide studentsexposure to contemporary mathematics and biology, addressed with modernresearch tools and methods. That is, projects must be genuine researchexperiences rather than rehearsals of research methods. Projects mustinvolve students from both areas in collaborative research experiencesand include joint mentorship by faculty in both fields. In addition, itis expected that projects will strengthen the research and educationcapacity, infrastructure, and culture of the participatinginstitutions.
To this end, projects should create models for educationin the mathematical and biological sciences and influence the directionof academic programs for a broad range of students. UBM is a jointeffort of the Education and Human Resources (EHR), Biological Sciences(BIO), and Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) Directorates at theNational Science Foundation (NSF).
