Prospective Applicants

The Congressional Hunger Center seeks applicants for the Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program. This two-year commitment begins with a one-year field placement incountries throughout Asia, Africa, and Latin America.  The second yearof the program places Fellows in a policy setting (often in the fieldorganization’s headquarters) to focus on public policy and its effectson hunger, food security and poverty. The Mickey Leland InternationalHunger Fellows Program operates on two-year cycle. The 3rd Class ofInternational Hunger Fellows began their service in June 2005 and willcomplete the program in May 2007. The 4th class of Fellows will beginin June 2007 and finish in May 2009.

TheMickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program cultivatesleadership and professional skills, provides substantial exposure tothe international development and relief arenas, and provides links toa vast network of development professionals.  Fellows receive a monthlystipend, health insurance, a housing subsidy, and transportation andtravel funds.  At the end of their two-year program, Fellows earn anend-of-service stipend.

Application Information
Because Fellows apply to specific work plans from differentorganizations in different regions of the world, and since eachplacement requires a specific set of skills and experience, interestedcandidates should review the various Fellowship work plan descriptionsbefore submitting an online application. 

Work plans and detailed application information will be posted November 1, 2006. The application deadline is January 15, 2007.

Selection Criteria

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in a related field
  • At least one year work or volunteer experience in a developing country
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities, and a strong commitment to alleviating hunger and poverty
  • Demonstrated flexibility and personal maturity
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to perform well in team and cross-cultural environments
  • US Citizen or permanent resident
  • Other skills and knowledge as specified in each Fellowship placement may also be required.
