Intercollegiate Studies Institute


The Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) provides a series of fellowships for students who are planning to teach liberal arts and social sciences at the college level. ISI’s main purpose is to convey to successive generations of college youth a better understanding of the values and institutions that sustain a free society. Applicants may apply for more than one fellowship, but an applicant may receive only one ISI fellowship during his or her academic career.
Qualifications: Applicant’s must be seniors or graduate students who are U.S. citizens. Students must engage in graduate studies for the purpose of teaching at the college level. Those attending pre-professional (medical, law) schools are ineligible. Applicants should be familiar with ISI’s purposes and programs and receive The Intercollegiate Review.
Amount of Award:
Richard M. Weaver Fellowship pays tuition and a $5,000 stipend; the Western Civilization Fellowship awards $20,000; the Salvatori Fellowship offers $10,000; and the Bache Renshaw Fellowship provides full tuition and a living stipend of $12,000.
Length of Award: One-time award for one year.

Richard M. Weaver: varies; Western Civilization: 3 awards; Salvatori Fellowship: 2 awards; Bache Renshaw Fellowship: 1-2 awards.
Application Deadline: February 15
Application Process: There is not an application form, but students are required to submit personal information, three brief statements (why the applicant has chosen teaching as a profession, why the applicant desires fellowship, and a declaration of intent to teach), all graduate and undergraduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and three essays (1-5 page and 2-10 page).
