Fulbright 2008-2009 Competition Now Open


Application Information for University of Michigan Students:

The purpose of these grants is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills. Fulbright Grants are available for study, research, teaching, and work in the creative and performing arts in over 100 countries worldwide. Grants provide a living stipend, health insurance, travel expenses, and in some countries, funding for language training.

Eligibility Criteria:
To apply for this program through the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus, applicants must

  • be U-M students, alumni or staff;
  • be U.S. citizens;
  • have completed an undergraduate degree by the beginning of the award;
  • demonstrate any language skills necessary to complete the proposed project; and
  • pre-register by Wednesday, August 1, 2007 (see instructions below)

Information Sessions:
It is advisable to attend an Information Session and/or make an individual appointment with the University of Michigan Fulbright Program Advisor Amy Kehoe. Email her at akehoe@umich.edu to set-up an appointment. If you are not in Ann Arbor and would like to discuss the Program, call her at 734.763.3297.

Information Sessions will be held at the International Institute, School of Social Work Building (on the corner of East and South University), in room 2609 (second floor) on the following days in June:

  • Tuesday, June 5 at 10:00
  • Friday, June 8 at 12:00
  • Monday, June 11 at 12:00
  • Wednesday, June 13 at 12:00

Candidate and project eligibility vary for each participating country. Please see complete program and application information on-line at: www.fulbrightonline.org.

Pre-Registration Deadline:
Wednesday, August 1, 2007. All applicants intending to apply through the University of Michigan MUST pre-register by Wednesday, August 1, 2007. To pre-register, you must begin the electronic application process on the Apply Now portion of the IIE website www.fulbrightonline.org. If you do not pre-register, you will have to apply at-large. Note: students are strongly encouraged to apply through their home institutions, and are at a disadvantage if they apply at-large.

Application Deadline:
Monday, September 17, 2007 at 12:00 p.m. Applicants must submit one copy of their

  • hard copy application form (signed),
  • project proposal (maximum length: 2 pages single-spaced, 12 pt. font),
  • personal statement (maximum length: 1 page single-spaced, 12 pt. font),
  • official transcript/s for all undergraduate and graduate work, (e) original or faxed letter(s) of affiliation (if any),
  • a foreign language report, if applying to a non-English-speaking country, and (
  • three letters of recommendation which must be submitted by the recommenders through the Embark application system (see instructions on the web site) and in hard copy (signed and on letterhead)
  • .

Submit your hard copy application by Monday, September 17, 2007 by 12:00 p.m. to the International Institute, Suite 2660, located in the School of Social Work Building on the corner of East and South University. Applicants should also submit their applications electronically by that time. Please note that edits can be made after the deadline, with permission from the University of Michigan Fulbright Program Advisor (Amy Kehoe, akehoe@umich.edu, 734.763.3297).

Advising:

The University of Michigan Fulbright Program Advisor Amy Kehoe is available to discuss project proposals, as well as review draft proposals and personal statements. Successful proposals from previous University of Michigan applicants are available for your review at the International Institute. Please note that Amy will be out of the office from mid-June to the end of July, and will read proposals in the order they were received beginning in August. If possible, try and attend an information session or meet with Amy before mid-June.

Be sure to familiarize yourself with all sections of the IIE website, but pay careful attention to the “Country Summaries” and the “How to Apply” and “Thinking of Applying” sections. After reviewing the website, should you have specific questions about the country to which you wish to apply, contact the appropriate world region Program Manager at IIE-NY:
