American Concrete Institute (ACI) Graduate Scholarship Program


$3,000 (U.S.) awards will soon be available through the ACIConcrete Research and Education Foundation (ConREF) for graduate study in the field of concrete for the 2006-2007 academic year. The awards include the ACI-W. R. Grace Scholarship, V. Mohan Malhotra Scholarship, Kumar Mehta Scholarship, Katharine and Bryant Mather Scholarship,ACI Bertold E. Weinberg Scholarship,and ACI Scholarship.

  • The ACI-W. R. Grace Scholarship is ACI’s first and longest-running industry-sponsored educational scholarship. This award was endowed by W. R. Grace and Co. and is offered annually as a continuation of Grace’s commitment to new technology in the concrete industry. See the 2006-2007 ACI-W.R. Grace Scholarship recipient.
  • The V. Mohan Malhotra Scholarship was established to acknowledge Dr. Malhotra, Chairman of CANMET’s Organizing Committee, for his efforts in organizing many international conferences, workshops, and seminars in the area of concrete technology. Recipients must be majoring in concrete materials science research. See the 2005-2006 V. Mohan Malhotra Scholarship recipient.
  • The Kumar Mehta Scholarship was initiated by Dr. Mehta in 2002 to recognize students pursuing research on sustainable development of concrete. Recipients must demonstrate ongoing effort to conduct graduate research on sustainable concrete. See the 2006-2007 Kumar Mehta Scholarship recipient.
  • The Katharine and Bryant Mather Scholarship was established in 1988 to honor Katharine and Bryant Mather for their exceptional contributions to the knowledge of concrete. Initial funds were contributed by the sponsoring committee of an international symposium held in 1987 to honor the Mathers.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Mather, deceased, were Honorary Members of ACI and Mr. Mather served as President in 1964. Continuing funding is provided by a gift from the Mather estate. The scholarship is for graduate study in the field of concrete. See the 2006-2007 Mather Scholarship recipient.
  • The ACI Bertold E. Weinberg Scholarship was named in 2003 to recognize Mr. Weinberg, the ACI Scholarship Council Chairman. This scholarship receives funding through generous contributions by members of ACI International. 2007-2008 Online Reference Form

The following criteria apply to all graduate scholarshipapplicants.  Please read and follow this information carefully.

  1. At the time of receiving a graduate scholarship (not necessarily at the time of application), the applicant shall possess a bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education which is accredited by the responsible regional or national agency.
  2. At the time of acceptance of a graduate scholarship (not necessarily at the time of application), the applicant shall have been accepted for graduate study at an accredited college or university in an engineering, architecture, or materials science program.  The graduate study program shall be in the area of concrete with an emphasis on structural design, materials, construction, or any combination thereof.  Applicants for the V. Mohan Malhotra Scholarship must be accepted for graduate study in concrete materials science research.  Applicants for the P.K. Mehta Scholarship must be pursuing graduate research in sustainable concrete.
  3. Applicants must be a full-time first or second-year (after bachelor’s degree) graduate student during the entire scholarship year. Course work during a summer session will count toward the degree year. Applications will be accepted from anywhere in the world but graduate study must take place in the United States or Canada during the award year.

  4. For your application packet to be considered for this award, each of the following pieces of information must be submitted by the deadline indicated:
    *Completed 2007-2008 typed application form (handwritten applications will not be accepted)
    *One-page resume (anything over one page will not be accepted)
    *Essay (1-page limit, 500 words or less, name must be on first page, please include all scheduled classes for balance of academic year)
    *Two (2) completed online reference forms
    *All undergraduate and graduate transcripts (all universities attended during all undergraduate and graduate years)

    ACI staff does not contact applicants upon receipt of their application materials. 

  5. The application, essay and resume should be sent to scholarships@concrete.org together in one email package.  Hard copies of applications, essays and resumes will not be accepted.
  6. Transcripts are only accepted if:
    1) they are original documents. Unofficial transcripts, copies of transcripts, faxed, or emailed transcripts are not acceptable under any circumstance.
    2) they are mailed directly from the university or
    3) they are mailed by the student but are in a sealed envelope with a university stamp over the seal.
    4) they are in English or accompanied by a translated English version as well as an explanation of the grading scale if different from the 4.0 scale used in the United States.

    If transcripts sent to ACI have a different last name than what appears on your application (maiden name), be sure to note it in parentheses on the name line of this application.

  7. Online reference forms are statements of evaluation of the applicant, in terms of potential for growth, character, leadership capacity, and career interest, which are required from two evaluators. One online reference form must be from a faculty member. We ask that the other be from an employer, if possible. All reference forms must be submitted in English. Only the online reference form will be accepted. Mailed, emailed, or faxed letters of recommendation will not be accepted. There is no need for more than two reference forms. Only the first two reference forms received will be included in your final application package. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all application materials are received by the deadline.
  8. All applicants must be proficient in the English language (or French as required in the Province of Quebec or Spanish in Puerto Rico). If one of these is not your native language, a written statement must be attached to this application attesting to this proficiency.
  9. The deadline for all application materials is before midnight on November 15, 2006. Please be sure that your name is on every piece of material submitted.
  10. This fellowship can be withdrawn for failure to comply with any of the items above.
