George J. Mitchell Scholarships

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship is a national competitive fellowship sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance. The Mitchell Scholarship, named to honor the former U.S. Senator’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community. Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend. Download a printable brochure.

How To Apply
We are now accepting applications for the 2008-2009 George J. Mitchell Scholarships. To apply, please go to the online application. Applications and procedures can change year to year so be sure to use the correct application form. Prospective applicants are urged to study the Frequently Asked Questions and the profiles of past Scholars to learn about the program, the selection process, and the qualities we seek in a Mitchell Scholar. On the basis of the application submissions, approximately 20 finalists are invited for interviews by the Selection Committee, which will be held this year on Saturday, November 17th, 2007. We also may conduct a number of semi-finalist interviews before determining the finalists.

Because the Mitchell program has only 20 national finalists for 12 awards, we expect that a finalist will be committed to accept a Scholarship if offered. The Mitchell Scholarship is only for one year and those who prefer a multi-year academic scholarship should apply for other fellowship programs. Applicants must be prepared to declare their priority interest in the Mitchell Scholarship if invited to be a finalist.

Questions about the Mitchell Scholarships can be addressed to the Director, Mary Lou Hartman, at 703-841-5843 or by email at hartman@us-irelandalliance.org.
